I stated earlier, I was being facetious. Just poking fun at how broad the definition of essential is, and that I thought it was a good thing.

    1. Downplaying it, period.
    2. Yes, it is. It's not at all comparable. They used it to undermine the warnings being issued by actual experts.
    3. Agreed.

All I am saying is that the response isn't political opportunism. That said, this, like everything else, is a political issue. Can't not be. But no one wants to see our economy being crushed and possibly setting off a recession, causing widespread harm to millions upon millions, such that these decisions are outcomes of what our experts are saying must happen. This is basically unprecented in modern times. I don't even think the shutdown during the 1918 flu pandemic were as widespread (though I might be wrong about that).

We'll need to ask somebody who lived through it. @AgingGator Care to weigh in? ;)

Really good data on who and what the disease targets. (Using China)
We already knew this, but it is nice to see visually.

    :) :)

I heard a story on the radio that compared St. Louis shut down to Philly, which held parades and how much worse the 1918 pandemic was there. Quick search shows it's been covered by many in the past. I just wasn't aware of it until yesterday. I think we almost take for granted what science has brought us--vaccinations and treatments--that have made past pandemics not as concerning other than in locations that experienced outbreaks. This is clearly a different animal and I'm afraid the thinking among some hasn't quite caught up yet.

(@tilly my friend, didn't have you in mind in the above :) )

I read about that too. Huge difference between the reactions of the two cities.

That is from the UK, and he is talking about their original idea of letting the virus run unchecked to let herd immunity build.
Their top scientist said the info was bad and insisted that the government change coarse. Those numbers are based on if the government had continued on the herd immunity strategy.

fever is obviously still convinced the entire thing is a hoax to hurt trump. If so it is quite the elaborate hoax with the entire world in on it. Those giant casinos in Vegas are missing out on revenue just to hurt trump..... Brilliant!

I consider myself young and fit but I have a 1 in 2500 chance of dying from this stuff if contracted. It’s not likely to happen but that’s too high for my liking.

And it's a joke article Doom nonsense not based in reality. They were scared he may have done that and people in other countries would have saw this overeacting nonsense for what it is.

Not hard to get the whole Western media in on it when you have the media in your pockets and these scientists willing to peddle nonsense for you. We are literally going to destroy our economy over about 1/10 or less of the people that die from the flu each year that usually have medical issues also like these people.

So a British doctor upended the perfect plan on how to save British lives all to make us think that we need to overreact to make sure that Trump gets blamed?

Fever, What data do YOU have that says letting herd immunity be the sole solution would have been the safe choice for the UK?
Because that is exactly what you are saying.

You've pretty much lumped every single person in any position of authority or expertise, or who reports on any of this, as being in on some grand conspiracy. But yes, there is a great fear of what this might do to the economy but a terrible fear about what it will do to our healthcare and to peoples lives without trying to combat this epidemic.

    Maybe I have cabin fever

This virus is perfectly suited to make old people resent young people & vice versa.

it’s like a weird social experiment conducted by god.

It’s like a plot for a sciFi book/movie. It’s perfectly designed to create conflicts of interest.

even more absurd to consider that trump is in on his own plot to take himself down by telling americans to avoid groups larger than ten. btw I thought part of the appeal of Trump is that no one makes him do anything. No all the sudden he is being forced to participate in this grand conspiracy.... pass that joint dude!
