The problem with actually testing people is that you find the sick ones. And it's still the early innings.
And we are still way short on tests. This is just starting to clean up some (although certainly not all or even likely most) of the backlog.
A NY ER doc was quoted as saying today (effectively) "today was a shitshow; it's getting much worse, and I have to send people home who don't meet testing requirements that I know deep down have coronavirus" EDIT: Found link. And got my 25 year old daughter out of NY this afternoon:
Mondays are always the worst. People that get sick over the weekend often show up on Monday. I was figuring today would be bad. The slight slowdown in the increase rate was just stored up cases to show up today.

“The NIH noted that subjects will be asked to return to the clinic for follow-up visits between vaccinations and for additional visits across the span of a year after the second dose.” This doesn’t seem nearly fast enough.
Why can’t they have a willing participant get the vaccine and then (with their consent of course) try to intentionally infect them with the disease? It seems that we would get to the answer a lot faster that way than just giving random people the vaccine candidate and checking in on them in a year. Especially if the social distancing and quarantine measures work — how will we know if a person remained healthy because the vaccine was effective or because they successfully avoided contact with the virus? With enough people in the trial I suppose you could still get a statistically valid answer, but probably not with only 45 unless a huge portion of the country were infected. I also get that we want to see if there are long term side effects of using the vaccine, but it seems like this is such an emergency that it might be worth foregoing the ordinary caution if we can find a cure that works. Famous last words, I know. Hard to say what the right answer is when all paths may lead to ill.
Wow. I was starting to think Boris Johnson wasn't as dumb as Trump. The guy seemed to be starting to recognize Trump as an idiot, and he gets points for that. But if this was the UK "strategy", he just took the prize hands down.
