    From your link:

Last April, in the early days of the H1N1 outbreak, Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano, speaking for the administration, declared a public health emergency. That declaration freed up supplies of oseltamivir (Tamiflu) and zanamivir (Relenza) from the national stockpile.
    A second link:

PolitiFact - President Obama declared H1N1 a public health emergency before anyone in the United States died

Obama’s acting director of health and human services declared H1N1 a public health emergency on April 26, 2009.

That was when only 20 cases of H1N1 — and no deaths — around the country had been confirmed.

So in the Spring, April 26 2009, Obama had already acted. No deaths and only 20 confirmed cases. Seems even your link verifies it.

True that. I think we've all probably been there. Actually, I think some fictional narrative about how we view ourselves has positive psychological benefits.

An interesting thing about the effect is that it is about how those with low cognitive ability lack the skills when it comes to self-assessment, so while they might think they are honestly self-assessing, it might not be that they are able to accurately do so.

While working with people who have alcohol problems I've found that the ones who are not as smart often are the easiest to work with because they are not so busy formulating an answer to everything you are saying. They tend to listen better because of it. They are often the ones who will follow concise suggestions. The old saying of being too smart for their own good comes into play with others.

Your own post says "the second such declaration since the flu first emerged last spring".

I guess we are really splitting hairs with the assumption a national health emergency declared by the Obama admin isn't the same thing or somehow didn't count until Obama raised it to the next level? Just seems like maximum political hackery, and a misleading/dishonest point at that.

This whole thing makes no sense considering Trump keeps downplaying it or even dismissing it as a common flu. HE isn't treating it as a national emergency, though this thing seems to be getting more attention from epidemiologists and the media than my recollection of Swine flu. Maybe Florida didn't get hit, but I don't recall ever being concerned with swine flu at all. What is going on in Italy has me concerned about this getting bad here in a couple weeks.

I don't know how anyone can feel confident that they know how the coronavirus is going play out in the US. There is such a range of expectations from some very smart people.

Question, and maybe I’m just paranoid.

Does anyone believe China is releasing true numbers?

Same question in regards to NK? LOL at this one.

Same question in regards to Iran?

Italy is the only one with a large amount of cases that I trust to release true statistics. They have over a 6% mortality rate.

Could it be worse than we know because some countries are lying?

    Or

Could there be a reason it is worse in Italy?

    Real Gator Fan said this
    Duchen said this
So I looked it up. Acting Secretary Napolitano, speaking for the administration, declared a public health emergency. That declaration freed up supplies of oseltamivir (Tamiflu) and zanamivir (Relenza) from the national stockpile.

Later (after 1000 people had died) President Obama has upped the ante in the battle to control the H1N1 flu by declaring it a national emergency, the second such declaration since the flu first emerged last spring.

The White House said the proclamation, which was signed late Friday, will allow public health agencies as well as doctors and hospitals to bypass certain requirements, but details about how that will transfer into clinical practice are not clear.

It seems clear that they are two different things, one, the public health emergency freed up drugs from the national stockpile and the other, which "upped the ante" the national emergency allowed doctors and hospitals to bypass certain requirements. So, in my opinion, @RealGatorFan 's post was true, not false as @duchen claimed.

Don’t agree with you. It is grossly misleading to post when the national emergency was declared and leave out the public health emergency and the national handling of the issue by the Obama Administration. Because by declaring the public health emergency, the illness was being properly addressed. The national emergency was the third declaration. There was the an intermediate declaration as well. All of this is not the “maybe it will go away” approach to COVID-19. This has been addressed elsewhere.

The obvious implication was to mislead that the prior admin "didn't do anything" until 1000 were dead. There was no mention of the prior declared public health emergency in that meme, just that Obama didn't declare it an emergency until 1000 were dead. Which, again, was false because his admin did declare the public health emergency. By the way I only see that we are currently under a "Public Health Emergency". Which is the exact same thing the Obama admin declared a year earlier... the one that apparently didn't count.

That you, a mod, are defending a misleading partisan meme as being anything but false is just sad. It almost seems intentionally obtuse. What do you think the point of that meme was in the first place?

It is fair to compare different public health crisis for context. To get an idea of the risk. So I have no issue with comparing this to prior flu or corona-virus outbreaks, that is a rational thing to do. I too have hope it will just sort of "fizzle out" like SARS or whatever, as I'd hope all Americans would. But to say "Obama didn't declare an Emergency until 1000 were dead" is a half-truth at best, it's just more pointless political hackery out of the right wing false media machine. It's sad really.

I literally have no idea what Obama's response was, I do remember some media hype about it but the only thing I really remember was that Obama may have been exposed to it (thinking that was pretty crazy at the time), and even as it got worse i wasn't terribly worried because I rarely catch the flu anyway in FL - even during bad seasons(literally only one time in my life). So I just saw it as a bad flu season.

The concern about this one is that there is zero vaccine, so there is no way to protect yourself from it - as many people are protected against flu (particularly the elderly and health care workers who are urged or required to get flu shots). Plus there is a possibility it is at least a few times more deadly than flu. Seems at least 5x deadlier (going on South Korea data), and possibly up to 20x deadlier depending on circumstance. It's not MERS or Ebola bad, but the fact it is overhwhelming Italy is concerning. It's a weird deal, it seems maybe it's calming down in China (after some extreme measures), but then Italy seems like it lost control. Then in the U.S. you had it tear through that nursing home. I'm not familiar with a flu bug killing 10 people in a single nursing home within just a few days, maybe it's happened, but that would be news to me to happen that quickly. If we can go through a month with it not really turning into Italy, we might be OK, but until then it's wait and see IMO.
