Just read that one of the cases was a young man with underlying respiratory issues from vaping. Wonder how many e-cigarettes manufactured in China by people exposed to COVID-19 have been distributed across the US and elsewhere.
I was listening to a virologist on radio and she said that virus will mutate to be less lethal to avoid killing host so virus can survive. First time I had heard that concept but that would be a good thing.
The death rate is actually the total global population in comparison to the total global deaths caused by coronavirus and total global deaths caused by flu. As you can’t possibly identify all the people that were infected from the flu or coronavirus at this time, the death rate is all those that could potentially be infected in comparison to deaths. The flu has a much higher infection rate and a much higher death rate when compared to the total global population (those that could potentially be infected)
I can highly recommend Zinsser's Rats, Lice, and History. An entertaining writing style with some interesting facts backing it up. Rats, Lice, and History: Being a Study in Biography, Which, After Twelve Preliminary Chapters Indispensable for the Preparation of the Lay Reader, Deals With the Life History of Typhus Fever by Hans Zinsser
It's all about what 'normal' is. Our normal now is that not nearly as many people die from these kinds of diseases, so of course there is going to be a lot of hype about it. Also, our economy is far more based on going out for eating/entertainment than it was in the 1950s. Way more travel now too. So if everyone suddenly starts staying home out of fear of getting sick, it's going to have a huge impact on our economy. Already many corporations are telling their employees to work from home. Airlines, hotels, restaurants, etc, are going to be devastated by this. We will almost certainly be going into recession.
There is immunity from flu from vaccines and previous exposure to similar strand. There is no immunity in the global population from coronavirus. Flu does not have higher infection rate In 18-19, flu was bad and appx 10% of the population was infected. If/when coronavirus goes full pandemic the numbers will likely be closer to 90% that ultimately get infected
Polio terrified people in my parent’s generation. I heard many stories. The virus was prevalent in the summer. Jonas Salk is a true national hero. There was fear and panic.
Sick Pasco Co. woman claims ER doctor told her she had coronavirus, says Health Dept. said otherwise Another great story. This woman was treated by a local hospital, told she "likely has coronavirus" after failing the regular flu tests... Apparently, the resources are so limited that county health officials decide who gets a test and who doesnt, and she was denied a test without much explaination. Now she says her mother, who she lives with, is also getting sick... PASCO COUNTY, Fla. (WFLA) – A Pasco County woman is sick, confused and scared for her life after Florida doctors informed her she “likely” has the coronavirus, but wouldn’t be tested. She’s worried and wants 8 On Your Sides to help get her answers.
Airlines aren't doing too well either Airlines could take $113 billion hit as coronavirus slams travel industry - CNN
Trump cancelled his trip to the CDC. Although the White House didn't provide a real reason my guess is that the purpose of the trip in the first place was to provide a photo op for the Donald and the trip was cancelled to avoid the potential embarrassment of the impulsive ignorant POTUS making public statements that conflicted with those of the CDC's medical professionals. White House cancels Trump’s visit to CDC
My doc in Atlanta told me yesterday that State of GA protocol was to refer any person suspected with coronavirus directly to the department of public health for a phone interview, who then would call the CDC for test kits if warranted and send them to the department of public health where the individual would go for testing. And of course, lock down the patient at home while all of this is going on. whole point is to funnel the actually infected people all to the department of public health, not to every doc office in the state. many physician offices here doing lengthy phone screenings before allowing patients to even come into the office for fear of infecting healthy people and med staffs. so basically, a form of organized chaos.
Couple of new cases north of ATL. BREAKING: Floyd County hospital reports preliminary case of coronavirus
Huge takeaway alert. Do we really want the govt in charge of everyone's health care? They could screw up a one car funeral procession.
How's you get that of what he said? He said the private doctor offices are diverting questionable patients to the county health department because they are scared of infecting their other patients and staff... Seems like private offices either can't or won't deal with it, and the public health officials are poorly equipped to deal with it.
I watched a short clip on CNN around a hour ago of a Trump supporter who agreed with the Donald that the coronavirus story was a hoax perpetuated by media and the Democrats and when asked about the reports of deaths from the virus she said that she didn't believe them and that they were part of the hoax. I guess that's what happens when people are influenced by a persuasive demagogue who has apparently been able to discredit the media.
