Yep that should work out well considering how few kids there are for many of these elderly coming up and that so many of the kids were males.

It's not a huge problem for China, actually. I think for a while there, the births were 51-49 in favor of males. And there are two "solutions" for Chinese males. One is to put young men into the Army (which of course only delays the problem) and give them things to do. The other is to allow (or encourage) men to go to poorer places like Vietnam to bring home a wife. This of course transfers the problem to another country.

In the cities, women have access to college educations and higher paying jobs. And the thinking is more modern than traditional in the cities, so women do not "belong to" their husband's families as much as they used to. So girls are more acceptable than they are in rural areas.

If it ever became a serious problem, China might do something drastic like initiate a war to get rid of part of their population, but I think they realize that warfare could spiral out of control on them and become disastrous. They already export a lot of men to projects and overseas businesses: mining, projects in Africa, the new Silk Road, etc.

China’s markets reopened Monday, currently down 8 percent. Worst day since 2015 if it holds.

US futures are up right now though.

True but some of that is pent up selling the Chinese markets were closed for a week due to the Lunar new year.

I used Friday here to buy a few things I have been waiting to get into.

One of our suppliers just informed us that they will be closed an extra week, on top of the new year's extension they just did.

Fairly mild action in US markets. The big question now is whether the lows hit on Friday hold up. Most strategists seem to think we go lower; therefore we probably won't.

Too soon to tell... there will be economic fallout for sure but how much its unclear.
These levels of threats tend to burn out quickly.

The media sure is running with it right now however.

It has a lower mortality than this years flu strain, a fact seeming lost on more than a few. Hard to say if its more virulent at this point.

“This is a preliminary study. Considering the grave situation, it was shared in BioRxiv as soon as possible to have creative discussion on the fast evolution of SARS-like corona viruses. It was not our intention to feed into the conspiracy theories and no such claims are made here. While we appreciate the criticisms and comments provided by scientific colleagues at BioRxiv forum and elsewhere, the story has been differently interpreted and shared by social media and news platforms. We have positively received all criticisms and comments. To avoid further misinterpretation and confusions world-over, we have decided to withdraw the current version of the preprint and will get back with a revised version after reanalysis, addressing the comments and concerns. Thank you to all who contributed in this open-“

China injected a bunch of money to stabilize their market.

Chinese counties are resorting to bribing people $140 to rat out neighbors who have been to Wuhan. Another county is considering the death penalty for people who spread the virus.

A county in China is offering people $140 to tell on neighbors who have visited Wuhan, and another is threatening the death penalty to anyone deliberately spreading the coronavirus

Amazing how a calamity brings out the best in people. And to think that the Chinese used to tattle on their neighbors for free. China seems to be handling this rather well, all things considered . . .

Right on; all of this hysteria over the coronavirus, yet this flu season in the US alone 19 million people have been infected, 180,000 have been hospitalized, and 10,000 have died-with many more to come. But I guess the good old fashioned killers are boring to us at this point
