Iowa native A.J. Puk on the verge of MLB debut after recovering from Tommy John surgery
    Tommy Birch, Des Moines Register Published 10:47 a.m. CT Aug. 12, 2019 | Updated 11:47 a.m. CT Aug. 12, 2019
After having season-ending Tommy John surgery, Cedar Rapids native A.J. Puk couldn’t play baseball for a long time.

    Or watch it.

“I didn’t want to just because I knew how close I was (to the big leagues),” Puk said. “Just seeing people go out there and play, it was like, man, I don’t want to watch it right now. I just want to focus on my arm and just getting it ready.”

Puk is not only back watching baseball, but he’s playing it again. And now, the former Cedar Rapids Washington star is once again on the verge of possibly making his big-league debut.

All hail the NL Rookie HR record holder: Pete Alonso!!!

Number 40 today and 95 RBIs on the year. Hitting .271 now as he has been on a tear of late.

Would not shock me a bit to see AJ get the call right away. Everyone has advanced scouting, but seeing a guy like Puk for the first time (easy 90+ 6'7") will take some getting used to. I could see him having immediate success if he can focus and throw strikes.

He has consistently been hitting 96-99. He can definitely do damage if he stays consistent with his fastball which he says he has really worked on lately.
