The allegation was sexual assault. It is very relevant to somebody being considered for a job like the Supreme Court.

I think lying about what you did 35 years ago when under oath is important when the job is Supreme Court Justice. If Kavanaugh is willing to lie about his high school and college drinking habits to protect his reputation, what else is he lying about?

You know, it's just like crucifying Jesus ...

Fox News host compares Kavanaugh to Jesus Christ and investigation to the crucifixion

Based on my personal knowledge of the term in that era.

Based on his classmates knowledge of the term, and their confirmation that he used it as such.

Really don’t understand the debate. If someone is claiming perjury, well obviously, they’re talking out of their ass. It certainly doesn’t prove that he tried to rape someone. Even if he said “yeah that’s a threesome”, doesn’t make him a rapist. So, what’s the point other than just totally guessing as to whether he really knew what it meant?

I know this is a megathread and it’s fun to speculate sometimes, but I don’t understand the fixation on this particular item.

Slut shaming is the standard operating procedure for misogynists, rapists and the lawyers who defend them.

Doesn't mean you are necessarily in one of those groups, but that's the company you're keeping. Enthusiastically.

They’re not gonna not confirm him based on your personal understanding of an urban dictionary entry.

That is a very generous explanation. Possible. But definitely generous.

So a 35 year old unsubstantiated allegation, is relevant if the job is important enough? Love to hear the logic there.

They have letters from 5 of Kavanaugh’s classmates explaining what the drinking game is, a letter from one of those classmate’s roommates at Boston College saying he taught them the drinking game (which they had never heard of before) in college and described his friends coming up with it, a yearbook entry crediting one guy with coming up with the name, and another yearbook entry describing a different guy as losing at it.

That’s a lot of evidence, from both the 1980s and now, suggesting that, whatever else it may have meant, it was pretty clearly a game in the context of early 80s Georgetown Prep.

Nor would I expect them to confirm or not based on my understanding of anything wrt this case.

Of course this has nothing to do with Urban Dictionary or my understanding of the term "Devil's Triangle". I was simply answering kygator's question about how I know.

The real issue here is about Kavanaugh lying. Over and over and over again. Under oath. Intentionally. And when he wasn't lying, he was deflecting, avoiding answers, interrupting and attacking.

None of that is the behavior of a Supreme Court Justice, or someone being forthright with their answers.

    None of it.

He didn't need to lie about Devil's Triangle. He chose to lie about it.
    - As he chose to lie about boofing.
    - As he chose to lie about Renate.
    - As he chose to lie about ralphing.
    - As he chose to lie about his excessive drinking.
    - As he most likely chose to lie about his virginity.
    - As he chose to lie about the witness affidavits.
    - As he chose to lie about the Environmental case highlighted earlier today.
    - As he is accused of choosing to lie in prior confirmation hearings about his access to stolen emails during the Whitewater investigation.

This guy and his lies. I can see why Trump is a big fan.

Of course the Pub Senators don't give a shit, so it probably doesn't matter.

*Edit - it could be as Ben points out there are witnesses giving credence to the drinking game story for Devil's Triangle, in spite of the common usage at the time. If accepted as true, it still leaves a laundry list of deception.

Yes. The job will involve him making decisions on the rights of women. If he can't respect the rights of women in his personal life, how can we expect him to do so as a justice? Furthermore, if he's given the job, he has life tenure and can only be removed via impeachment and conviction. It is quite different from an elected official who can be voted out of office.

Fair enough. It could be it happened that way, in spite of the common usage at the time.

If we're going to accept those accounts, what of the classmates claiming to know that Kavanaugh knew these references in the yearbook to be sexual references? His reference to Renate? The crude song he sang in school about her? His events of passing out drunk? The reported witnesses to him putting his junk in Ramirez face? His college roommate identifying him as a frequent incoherent, belligerent drunk?

Should we not also look at this information and other relevant information and give it similar weight?

Senate Democrat after reading FBI Kavanaugh report: 'I've never been so appalled at this institution'
"I love the Senate, and I’ve never been so appalled at this institution," Schatz told reporters moments after leaving the secured room where the single copy of the report is being held.

Republicans have said there is no corroborating evidence to support Christine Blasey Ford, who alleges Kavanaugh assaulted her while they were in high school. Schatz pushed back.

"All of our worst fears about this being incomplete in the extreme have been justified," Schatz said. "If you don't interview people, provided by counsel for the accusers, who say they can corroborate and then you say our interview process provided no corroboration, it's a joke."

All that's been proven is that he may have been a jerk in high school in the most cliche possible way. He was a jock and a frat boy...

Are you suggesting he should've given off that impression in what is essentially a job interview that he was a douche bag in high school? That sounds like a brilliant idea...
    :emoji_upside_down:

It's also irrelevant, but it would make him look bad...

Also, the guy went to Yale... for undergrad and law school... That's a hard-studying person... He just worked hard and played hard...

    Interesting...

If I were on the left... I'd be leaning on the "Devil's Triangle" one if I wanted to go the route of an attack based on perjury... But that's just me...

How the Kavanaugh hearing should have gone according to you guys:

Senator: Mr. Kavanaugh, how often would you drink in high school?

Kavanaugh: Whenever I had the chance

Senator: Were you ever... "disrespectful" to any women in high school.

Kavanaugh: Well, I would make sexual jokes about women on a regular basis, yes.

Senator: Would it be fair to say you were a bully in high school?

    Kavanaugh
    : I don't know if I were a bully, but I was certainly a douche bag...

Why would he say these sorts of things?
Why should these sorts of issues manipulate our opinion one way or another?
Is he testifying about sexual assault, or being a douche bag in high school and maybe college?

    It's ridiculous...

It's just my understanding that "Aluminius" or whatever it was, is an invented word, anyways....

If there's any word that's subject to interpretation it's that one...

"Boof" has several different meanings, all of which relating to butt holes...

Devil's Triangle... if you were to ask a random person on the street, before the hearings, I'm pretty sure everyone would either say that they didn't know, or it's a threesome with two men and one woman... That doesn't mean that's what Kavanaugh meant when he wrote it... which is what matters, here... but that's just the best leg to stand on if you're going to stand on anything...

I also don't see how him making a reference to a threesome in his high school yearbook is in any way relevant to his selection as a Supreme Court Justice...
