Are we now pretending that the position coach has no say in how his unit is recruited? Are we now pretending that it's not the position coach's job to develop talent behind his upperclassmen? Are you honestly trying to absolve Shannon of all blame for what went wrong this year? It seems like he's not accountable at all for the defense's failures or the failures of his former unit. What is Shannon responsible for then? I have no issues with Randy Shannon as a person. I simply don't value him as a DC.
"Turning over the keys" isn't a thing in college, and what sunk Kelly in the NFL. That is different than mandating a coach be retained and I'd be shocked that that is an actual thing. But he may very well be demanding NFL-lite concessions. For UCLA that might make sense because they are nothing special in football. It would be a colossal mistake for UF and I'd say thanks for the consideration and good luck, if so. Gator Football must remain the brand, and the coach must be the CEO. Important but replaceable. To be clear, I am a labor guy. But roles are critical. When you position your company to rely on one person, the countdown to demise is on. Simply can't secede that much leverage. I could make the argument that Mac extracted far too much leverage out of the gate. Good for him, bad for the brand. Having said all that, my own gut says it's 60-40 Kelly is new Gator coach by early next week, with acceptable boundaries both ways. If he didn't learn that he needs defined boundaries through OU/Philly/SF, I don't want him. Go sink UCLA.
Dude the conversation isn't " Chip we'd like to hire you and by the way how do you feel about working with coach X,y,z? What it really sounds like is congrats coach welcome to Florida who are you thinking about bringing with you? This staff turnover is why most coaches suffer a bad record in year three because there is roster attrition and small class size in the transition signing class.
I panicked a bit but seriously....what assistant coach Kelly has reached out to would already be talking to the media or anyone else...made up story and that is why it's down.
Also have to wonder ...would Bama , OSU, Michigan, Texas be vulnerable to losing a coach to UCLA? No matter the circumstances? Makes u understand where UF really is and how we need to fix it
Randy Shannon....some people defending this? Yall crazy I'll drive his butt to the airport if it means Chip Kelly
I guess to those that wanted to get this place back to boring and predictable you’ve done a great job.
That does seem to be the only agreement possible here. I've been complaining about Shannon since Week 1 to friends and family. As a football junkie, I absolutely hate his schemes and defensive philosophy, but I've already argued that point ad nauseum.
If they did try to force Shannon on Kelly, and Kelly goes to UCLA, then we're stuck with Shannon because he'll be forced on whoever does take the job. And Shannon will then be resented by all Gator fans, affecting both staff chemistry and recruiting. It's hard to believe, but not impossible to believe with Foley still around.
I’ve seen some impressive mental gymnastics by our fanbase the last few weeks but I think this takes the cake. 10/10
