IMHO the reason for the mid-season Mac firing was simply the ability to fire with cause. If they were going to use Mac's death threat statements as "fired with cause," it would have been harder to justify if they kept him on for another few months (a multi-million dollar situation depending on the buyout clause). I have been in the HR world and have seen arguments made over workmen's comp benefits either given or not given strictly depending on how long after the "fired with cause" event happened versus when the person was actually shown the door. Once again just my opinion and no inside knowledge at all.
